Advancements in the treatment of keratoconus: collagen cross-linking
A recent addition to our medical services is the collagen cross-linking treatment. This innovative technology represents a great advancement in the treatment of keratoconus. Keratoconus is a progressive disease of the cornea; it appears usually during teenage or early adulthood, and it might be surmised by the constant need to update glasses. The cornea grows thinner and weaker with time developing an ectasia. The traditional treatment involves rigid contact lenses or intrastromal rings, and eventually some of the patients require a cornea transplant. If the disease has an early detection now we can offer our patients collagen cross-linking treatment. The cornea is made fundamentally of collagen fibers; by the intensification of the unions of these fibers, resistance of the tissue gets augmented and the development of the disease slows down.

Continuing our public awareness and educational activities, Dr. Martín E. Cortina gave a conference on diabetic retinopathy in the city of Trenque Lauquen to an audience of health care professionals, with the goal of achieve some consensus in the management of diabetic patients and obtain an interdisciplinary approach.
